Breweries in Seattle and Kobe collaborate to mark an important anniversary

Lucky Envelope Brewing and Rokko Beer create a commemorative beer

This is not just another collaboration beer. SEA-Kobe Juicy IPA celebrates a 65-year kinship between the city of Seattle and the city of Kobe, Japan. This Friday at its taproom in Seattle, Lucky Envelope Brewing releases a special beer that was designed and created in partnership with Rokko Beer, a brewery in Kobe.

In 1957 Seattle and Kobe formed one of the first international sister-city relationships; it is still active today. Last month, a delegation of Kobe officials—including Kobe’s mayor Hisamoto— made their way to Seattle and met with Seattle delegates and Mayor Bruce Harrel, further extending the spirit of friendship and cultural exchange between the two cities. The Kobe delegation included some folks from Rokko Beer.

Delegates from Kobe visited the Lucky Envelope Brewing tasting room in Ballard, including mayor Hisamoto.

“We could not have been more honored to have been part of the 65th Anniversary of the sister city partnership between Kobe and Seattle.” said Barry Chan, one of the co-founers of Lucky Envelope Brewing. “We loved hosting Rokko Beer and learned so much through our travels to Japan.” (He recently visited Kobe, where he met the crew from Rokko. “The SEA-Kobe Juicy IPA was designed with local Skagit Valley Malts and reflected modern hop combinations and amounts not widely adopted in Japan. Rokko was more than happy to select two of their favorite hops, El Dorado and Mosaic.”

Rokko Beer’s brewer, Takuya Obuchi, and its Managing Director, Manabu Nakajima, made the trip to Seattle and helped bring the Sea-Kobe Juicy IPA to life. Of course, while they were here, the crew at Lucky Envelope was happy to show their new friends around Western Washington, which included visiting some of our local breweries.

Showing off Deception Pass, and WA beer.

“I’m happy to note they were repeatedly impressed by the beer quality and brewery camaraderie observed within the Washington beer industry,” said Chan.
