A celebration of Washington hops and Washington beer
Washington Hop Mob is now less than one month away. The series of events runs from February 6th through February 15th. So far there are 12 events planned, as far north as Bellingham and as far south as Vancouver. For these events, 38 Washington breweries have signed up to produce Hop Mob beers this year. The official Hop Mob Kick-Off event is at Brouwer’s Cafe in Seattle on Thursday, February 6th. All of the Hop Mob events are listed below. (Interested in hosting an event? Click here.)
Each Hop Mob event features at least eight of the Hop Mob beers on tap, available in flights and/or taster sizes as well as full pours.
What’s a Hop Mob Beer?
In the past Hop Mob focused on Triple IPA, but we’ve changed directions a bit and are now offering brewers more flexibility, asking them to brew a beer of any style as long as it is at least 50 IBUs (International Bitterness Units) and features “a full expression of hop character.”

The challenge is to create a beer that displays both the bitterness provided by hops and the aromatic character provided by hops. In other words, a full expression of hop character that is often missing from today’s hop-forward beers, which tend to lean one way or the other, aromatic or bitter but not both. In this context, aromatic refers not only to the way a beer smells, but also to the fruity, floral, resinous, and herbal flavors hops provide.
Hop Mob beers are created and produced exclusively for Washington Hop Mob; a Hop Mob beer is not just a rebranded version of a brewery’s regular IPA.

And the Point is…
The goal of Washington Hop Mob is to celebrate hops by showcasing the prowess with which Washington brewers put hops to work in their beers. Washington’s farmers, particularly in the Yakima Valley, harvest more hops than farmers in any other state. Each year they produce approximately 75 percent of the U.S. hop crop and about 25 percent of the world’s hop crop.
Washington Hop Mob is organized by a three-man team: Adam Robbings of Reuben’s Brews came up with the concept and represents the beer-making side of things, Nat Pellman of Brouwer’s Cafe represents the event-hosting side of things, and I manage the administrative and promotional angles.
