Two beer releases this week from Chuckanut Brewery

Single Hop Lager – Strata

Chuckanut Brewery’s Single Hop Lager series of beers are built to showcase a single hop variety. The latest in the series explores the flavors and aromas imparted by Strata hops, which first made the news here on the Washington Beer Blog back in 2017. Formerly known as X-331, this hop variety is the result of a collaboration between Oregon State University’s hop breeding program and Indie Hops, a Portland-based hop supplier.

“Continuing with exploring the use of new varietal hops in a basic Chuckanut Lager recipe, this round of Single Hop Lager uses NW Strata hops. Always looking to understand brewing ingredients and methods to produce the best beers ever, Chuckanut continues the quest of learning more about hops new on the market. By experimenting with US and other hops from around the world Chuckanut gains the understanding of the nuances of each varietal. Chuckanut’s brewers are excited to share their exploration and learning of hops with Chuckanut drinkers in each rendition of the Single Hop Lager.”

“This rendition in the Series uses the Yakima Valley Strata hop formerly known as X-331 released originally from the OR State Aroma Hop Breeding Program in Corvallis. Single Hop Strata gives this basic crisp Chuckanut lager recipe pops of tropical flavors and aromas of pineapple, citrus and pine! Single Hop Lager Strata is fantastic with spicy foods from southern climates for a cooling and complimentary beverage. Great as a crispy, fruity beer any time of day, enjoy exploring this new Single Hop Lager from Chuckanut.”

The Good Kind of Smoke, Rauch Helles Lager

Knock on wood. This summer, Western Washington has remained generally smoke-free. Other than a couple of bad days, we have been generally spared the wildfire smoke. All sympathy for those places enduring the smoke and especially the fires. But around here, knock on wood.

Chuckanut Brewery recently announced the release of its Rauch Helles Lager. The good kind of smoke/

“Summer bbq’s seem to call for smoke beers to bring out the flavors of outdoor grilling. Chuckanut Brewery uses a delicate hand with its smoke malts to produce a super drinkable Rauch (German for smoke) beer. Chuckanut has just released its Rauch Helles Lager that captures the smoky flavors of a Rauch lager with the gentle easy-going nature of a Holles Lager. It’s an interesting beer that has a malty, crackery, toasted flavor spiked with smoky overtones due to the use of beechwood smoked malted barley. There’s just enough noble hops used to balance the sweetness of the malt creating a nice, dry finish typical of a lager beer.”

“The light color and soft flavors of Chuckanut’s Rauch Helles Lager makes a great match to any bbq or smoked seafood. Boasting its unique flavor profile and gentle sparkling mouthfeel you’ll want to try this unusual and uncommon lager if you see it on tap at your favorite pub or restaurant in the Puget Sound or Portland, OR areas. Prost!”
