Information about the new mask guidelines, or lack thereof

Imagine a day when that silly image above is totally irrelevant. A day when we don’t have to worry about or talk about all of this mask stuff anymore. Lordy, I am so looking forward to that day.

“I do kind of wish it was still black and white,” one Seattle brewery owner told me this morning. “I’m glad we’re moving forward but I can see this being messy.”

He was talking about the announcement that Washington will fully adopt masking guidance recently issued by the CDC. That is, fully vaccinated individuals are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor and outdoor settings. Though individuals are not required to wear masks, a business is not forbidden from maintaining its own mask policy.

It is likely, if not certain, that some restaurants, bars, taprooms, and other businesses will still want customers to wear masks to protect not-yet-vaccinated employees and other individuals. I just hope people will respect the policies in place at individual businesses.

If the sign on the door says you have to wear a mask, it does not matter that the Governor or the CDC says you don’t have to wear a mask. It is the business’ prerogative. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else. It’s really that simple, but yeah, “I can see this being messy” is probably a fair statement.

The Washington Brewer Guild shared some info this morning regarding the issue. Here it is:

While the Department of Health and Labor & Industries is expected to issue more guidance next week, we have received the following information from the governor’s office:

  • Businesses are not required to enforce masking for non-vaccinated patrons. This is consistent with our current mask order
  • Businesses are not required to check vax cards or any other proof of vaccination
  • Businesses may still adopt a policy that masks are required for all patrons and a policy to check for proof of vaccination

Mask policies will vary from brewery to brewery, with each business adopting policies to best fit their brewery, employees, and community. We will share any official guidance as soon as it becomes available.
