Flying Lion Brewing embraces the darkest time of year

The darkest time of year invites the darkest kind of beer. Seattle’s Flying Lion Brewing once again invites you to embrace the darkness at its annual Dark Beer Fest, December 17 through 19. It’s a prelude to the solstice and the very darkest day of the year.

The event at the Flying Lion Brewing location in the Columbia City neighborhood started back in 2014 when it offered just six beers. It has grown over the years and for 2021 features over 30 different selections, including cellared favorites, special releases, and other limited availability brews. The beer lineup changes daily. In addition to onsite tasting formats (taster flights), don’t forget to bring your growler.

The lineup includes a collaboration beer that Flying Lion concocted with their friends at West Seattle’s The Good Society Brewery. The beer is described as a riff on a timeless classic, English Strong Ale. “Using a touch of peated malt, it is rich, slightly smokey, and eccentric like your favorite winter-night spy movie. Mild aromas of toasted hazelnut and dried fruit round out this twist on a traditional English style.”

It’s an open seating event, meaning tickets are not required. State and county COVID mandates will be enforced, meaning proof of vax is required for indoor seating and masks must be worn when not seated. The big tent returns to the parking lot for this event.

For you early risers, each day at 10:00 AM they’ll offer donuts to accompany your beer, while supplies last. For you non-beer drinkers, they’ll pour a dark cider that Brownrigg Hard Cider crafted for the event.
