Airways Brewing introduces its version of this burgeoning new beer style

At an event last night at Beer Star in White Center, I was fortunate enough to sample a pint of this new beer from Airways Brewing, a Brut IPA. This beer style is new and it seems the collective brewing industry is still figuring out exactly what makes a Brut IPA a Brut IPA, but IMHO this one is a great example of the style. In other words, I hope Brut IPAs like this one set the standard. Nary a hint of sweetness, a wee-tiny bit of bitterness, but mostly just lots of lovely aroma hop character that is just slightly fruity, but not as juicy as many of the IPAs on the market these days, and then it finishes very dry. (See our previous story about Brut IPA to learn more about the style.)

A well-executed Brut IPA is a great place to showcase the character of a hop variety, in my humble opinion, and Brutal Approach Brut IPA makes use of an interesting, fairly new hop variety, Hallertau Blanc. The hop breeders will tell you that this one is a daughter of the more widely recognized Cascade hop variety. Hallertau Blanc was bred at Hop Research Center Hüll, which is located in the Hallertau region of Bavaria, one of the hop capitols of the world.

Today we release our first stab at a relatively new style of beer: Brut IPA. What’s that? It’s a style of beer developed in San Francisco earlier this year that has the hop levels of a Northeast IPA (like Luxury Jet), but is extremely dry with no residual sweetness (like a Brut Champagne). If you like hop flavor and aroma, but don’t like juiciness or bitterness, well here ya go.

We call ours Brutal Approach #1. This version features an all German Hallertauer Blanc hop base, which gives it notes of white grape, pineapple and passionfruit. On tap today at the Tap Room & Brewery and over the next couple of days at The Bistro & Beer Garden.
